How to Design the Dreamiest Guest Room

How to Design the Dreamiest Guest Room

Our number one rule when designing a five-star guest room? Comfort, comfort, comfort. From layers of luxe sheets and cozy robes to an extra phone charger and bedside carafe of water, here are our top tips and essentials for creating a home-away-from-home so welcoming and comfortable your friends and family may never want to leave.

1. GET YOUR LINEN CLOSET READY

• Every bed in the house should have its own three sets of sheets. One on the bed, one in the wash, and one in the linen closet.

• If you have multiple guest rooms, color code their linens to help with organization (i.e. blue banded sheets and towels go in the “blue room”).

• If you’re up for the spend, offer down, down alternative, and memory foam pillows as options.  Pillow choices are deeply personal and can make or break a good night’s sleep.

2. MAKE THE BED

• Think in layers that can be added and removed depending on temperature and personal preference.

• Start with a simple sheet set. Then add a coverlet or quilt, which can be used on its own or underneath a duvet.

• Fold a lighter throw at the foot of the bed that can be used as an additional sleeping layer or for curling up in an armchair.

3. PILE ON THE PILLOWS

• Throw pillows and shams make the bed look cozy and welcoming while providing great back and neck support for reading or watching TV in bed.

• Make sure guests have a place to store non-sleeping pillows—such as an armchair, basket, or trunk—when they’re ready to turn in.

4. GIVE THEM THE SPA TREATMENT

• Hang a cozy robe on the bathroom or closet door so guests don’t have to waste valuable suitcase real estate.

• Stash an extra set of plush towels in the bathroom or guestroom closet.

• Offer frequently forgotten-at-home toiletries, like toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, hairspray, hand and facial moisturizer, and cotton swabs.

5. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

• Have an extra charger in the room for guests to charge devices.

• Place a carafe of water by the bed to mitigate any midnight treks to the kitchen.

• A good reading light by the bed is a must.
